The journey begins Part 3 - Sri Chinmoy's Poetry

My most treasured spiritual experiences

Sri Chinmoy's poetry -

Ever so slowly through Sri Chinmoy's guidance my regular meditation practice brought increasing awareness, tranquility and fulfilment into my life.  But how would I hold and deepen this experience, and where should I focus my spiritual energies to gain a better understanding of Sri Chinmoy's philosophies?

There were so many opportunities available to me, would I build this foundation on Sri Chinmoy's music, art, poetry, literature, humanitarian service or athletics, should there be a primary focus or elements of each?

A selection of Sri Chinmoy's books

With meditation as my core discipline I started by reading Sri Chinmoy's major literary works. I was drawn to them all, captivated by their profound wisdom. However many in parts were too lofty for my early understandings. At this stage I was searching for anything that lifted by spiritual awareness or inspired my imagination I would return to these volumes later.

My focus then turned towards Sri Chinmoy's poetry. With thousands of poems, in fact with over 100,000 to choose from, I certainly had plenty of scope. Once again I found many were beyond my simple understandings, I prayed that I would ultimately be able to comprehend these expressions of my Master's most intimate awareness of God. But for now I needed to start with the simplest expressions of Sri Chinmoy's universal wisdom, something that simply touched my heart or inspired me. A base to build from gradually opening and lifting my awarenesses into a higher and more fulfilling experiences of Sri Chinmoy's oneness-reality.

So I kept searching -  I then discovered the simplicity, beauty and power of many three and four lined aphorisms. These were so soul-stirring and embodied such newness, inspiration and joy. My heart was filled with a new happiness as I searched further. Each was a window into a higher spiritual realm, so welcoming and revealing. It was like a game of hide -n- seek, here they were tucked away amongst their bigger brother and sister poems, just waiting to be found. At last this is what I had been searching for, now I felt I was taking my first real steps as a seeker beginning his spiritual journey by his Master's grace,  I was so grateful!

Heart-Garden cover And so began this all-embracing journey that has so joyfully carrried me through many, many years. I must have read over 70,000 of Sri Chinmoy's poems during this time. Subsequently I then began to collate them into categories such as - Inspiration, Reflections, Happiness, Children, The Heart, The Mind, The Soul, Self-giving, The Seeker and now My Master, God, My Lord, and the list grows.

Finally I had hand-picked over 3,000 aphorisms. If these particular poems inspired my life then perhaps they may also bring joy to others.  So after receiving Sri Chinmoy's blessings to have them published, I approached a publisher through a writer's agent and the result is the most beautifully produced hard-coverd book, named and gloriously illustrated by Sri Chinmoy, entitled Sri Chinmoy's Heart-Garden, a collection of over 300 of Sri Chinmoy's universal aphorisms.

From Sri Chinmoy's Heart-Garden:

Only by becoming humble
Can we become
What we truly are.
We become of greater use,
Of greater help to mankind.

The heart
Is the most sacred reality
In each human being.

Your own sincere search
For yourself
Will become a synonym
For perfection-happiness.

A little ripple
Wakes the sea.
A tiny thought
Shakes the world.

And very recent inspirations from Sri Chinmoy's writings:

Do not be afraid
Of doing great things.
Just regard these things
As quite nomal and natural,
And do them spontaneously.
This is the only way
You can bring to the fore
God within you
For His own supreme manifestation.

Mine is the mind
That is bewildered.
Mine is the heart
That is broken.
Mine is the vital
That is bruised.
Mine is the soul
That is aching.
My Lord,
Yet I feel
That You love me,
Yet I know
That you care for me.

I love God
Not because He is great.
I love God
Not because He is good.
I love God
Because nothing else
Ever inspires my mind,
Nothing else
Ever feeds my heart,
Nothing else
Ever fulfils my life.

My only prayer is that we all rest quietly within the fragrance, beauty and depth of Sri Chinmoy's poetry, Sri Chinmoy's own heart-garden. Each is a blossoming reality, ultimately may we fully embody their teachings and divine illumination, this I personally long for.
