  worthless bad average good great

I am drawn to write this article after once again being totally inspired by an elderly gentleman who lives near by..

The man I mention is at a guess in his late seventies. He has obviously had a stroke and walks with a decided lean carrying his paralysed arm by his side. His walk is normally slow, hesitant and unbalanced as he labours to swing his paralysed leg forward. I see him very regulalry walking past my house on his way down to the shops, a good 20 mins walk for an able bodied person.

My admiration for him is great, he must take at least 1 hour to walk this distance, most of it uphill. He carries no walking stick, preferring to walk unassisted. I fear that he will fall and hurt imself, but he has his freedom as he walks to the shops every day.

Sometimes his pace is surprising fast, other times painfully slow, but still he continues to force his body to make this trip everyday. I feel that if he was to sit at home he would be wheelchair bound, but by forcing himself to this daily journey he is slowly and gradually overcoming his condition.

My heart always goes out to him as I pass by and I only hope that I too at his age shall possess his determination.
