Back in 1994 as a new disciple of Sri Chinmoy I had been invited to photograph the runners of the Sri Chinmoy Harmony Run as they journeyed across the varying terrain of the US. We ran through fourteen States before I had to return to Australia. On my last day with the team I ran my first marathon through New Mexico, and on that run I felt the overwhelming presence of the Apache spirits...

I commenced my solitary run in the early morning mist, as it turned out that mist would turn into fine rain for the duration of the run. Carrying the Harmomy Torch I left the support team behind in the misty fog. At this point alone I looked up to see the silhouette of a large eagle resting on a nearby fence post.

As I approached the eagle opened its wings and quietly flew further into the mist, out of sight. But not before it had let out an echoing screech. At that moment I felt the presence of the Apache Indian spirits who once lived on these rolling plainlands.

Further down the road there was the silhouette again, but this time on the opposite side of the road. And as before as I approached it slowly opened its wings, turned to look at me and slowly and majestically disappeared into the fog. I never saw this messenger again, but I knew in the depths of my heart that I had been blessed by this eagle, a guardian of the Indian spirits, who gave me welcoming approval to journey across their sacred lands.
