Simple Exercises For Stress Relief
I have discovered that as there are hundreds of things that one could get stressed about, there are also the same number of stress remedies out there. From colour therapy to stress therapy to aromatherapy. However, here I have listed the most popular methods to alleviate stress. These are simple exercises anyone can practice to eliminate tension in the body, mind and entire being.
BREATHING It is so often happens is that when one is stressed and under pressure, it manifests itself through the physical body. This results in shallow chest breathing, often through the mouth. By consciously slowing down the breath and breathing deep into the diaphragm, one automatically becomes more relaxed, physically and mentally. Following is another exercise that will also help create calmness within, by Sri Chinmoy.
“Each time you breathe in, try to feel that you are bringing into your body peace, infinite peace. The opposite of peace is restlessness. When you breathe out, try to feel that you are expelling the restlessness within you and also the restlessness that you see all around you. When you breathe this way, you will find restlessness leaving you.”
NUTRITION Altering your diet can remarkably change the way you feel. Obviously caffeine and sugars should be reduced as they can cause an imbalance in your energy levels. Eating slowly and chewing your food well is also recommended, if you find this hard try using chopsticks. Eating patterns are also worth observing, not skipping meals or snacking too much as well as sticking to a well balanced healthy diet.
VISUALISATION By using the imagination, one can easily rid unwanted thoughts and discard stress. Imagination really does have a reality of its own. By visualising a scene from nature, such as a garden, the sky, or the ocean, the qualities of these surroundings will enter into you, taking away any restlessness.
"Imagine the silence on the mountain top."
"Imagine the dance of twinkling stars."
"Imagine the smiling and singing and playing of children."
"Imagine the beauty of your heart garden."
-Sri Chinmoy
