Birds

Cross-posted from

One wallowing gull
Sparrows in flurries
Covert wren hurries
from doves in languid pairs

Swallows carve the sky
to switch and dive
Or rakish robin
takes up airs and graces

In this small square
they stretch and splash
trill and scratch
flit and bicker

One eye flickers
“Where is your song?
Have you no wings?”
“Sir, I’ve yet to rise and sing.”
