World Gratitude Day
Today, September 21st is World Gratitude Day
"...Gratitude in the inner world is nothing but self-expansion. It is through self-expansion that we become aware of our true reality, which is Infinity itself. Your contribution to the world at large, to the inner world especially, is momentous. As a seeker, I know that there is nothing on earth as valuable and significant as gratitude. In God's Eye there is nothing more meaningful and precious than man's gratitude. Therefore, to you, to the illumining soul in you, I wish to offer my boundless and ever-growing gratitude..."

Spirituality and a vegetarian Diet
FAQ on Vegetarianism with Sri Chinmoy
Question: What role does a vegetarian diet play in your teachings?
Sri Chinmoy: In my teachings the vegetarian diet plays a most important role. In order to become pure, a vegetarian diet helps us considerably. Purity is of paramount importance in our spiritual life. This purity we must establish in the physical, the vital and the mental. When we eat meat, fish and so forth, the aggressive, animal consciousness enters into us. Our nerves become agitated; we unconsciously become restless and aggressive. The mild qualities of vegetables, on the other hand, help us to establish in our inner life as well as in our outer life, the qualities of sweetness, softness, simplicity and purity.
But again, if you ask me whether by becoming a strict vegetarian you can realise God or not, then I would say “No,” a definite “No.” There are millions and millions of people on earth who are strict vegetarians, but I don’t think there are millions and millions of God-realised souls on earth. For God-realisation we need aspiration. But in answering your question, I wish to say that it is always advisable, if possible, to have a vegetarian diet in order to further one’s progress in the inner discipline, so that one can feel that even the body, with its purity, can help one’s inner aspiration to become more intense and more soulful.
Q. So a vegetarian diet is not necessary in order to realise God?
Sri Chinmoy: Just by becoming a vegetarian one will not realise God. It is impossible! Many people have followed strict vegetarian diets, but there are not very many people on earth who have realised God. In India all widows of respectable families are supposed to be vegetarians. But if you count all Indian widows, you will not find many God-realised souls among them. Unless these women pray and meditate most sincerely and devotedly, they will make very little spiritual progress.
If you stop eating fish and meat you will not realise God overnight. Far from it! You must not expect such great results from so small an effort. But your aspiration will be increased. Your mild qualities, soft qualities, aspiring qualities will come to the fore sooner. Everything depends on how fast you want to make progress. If you feel that each second counts, if you feel that there is no end to your goal, then the best thing is to achieve the things that are ahead of you as soon as possible.
Q. Do you feel it is important for the aspirant to follow the vegetarian diet?
Sri Chinmoy: Know that we have come from the animal kingdom. We believe in reincarnation. So once upon a time, we were all animals. Now, we have come into the human creation and we are progressing and evolving and all of us will realise God on the strength of our aspiration.
For an aspirant, it is advisable to be a vegetarian precisely because when he eats meat, the aggressive quality of the animal enters into him. We are trying to live a life of peace and tranquility. If we sincerely want that kind of life, then it is foolishness on our part to eat something that would diminish our peace and tranquility and stand in the way of our meditation, concentration, etc. So it is always advisable to accept the vegetarian life. But, again, there are some countries or some parts of the world where it is exceptionally cold and there it is impossible for those particular people, to live on vegetables alone. What are they going to do then? There only if they eat meat can they remain on earth. Then, again, there are some sincere seekers whose physical constitution is very weak. Some children, for example, who are very ill require meat for a short time to regain their strength. Others from the beginning of their lives have been eating meat and now they have formed such a habit, such a bad habit, you can say, that they cannot manage without it even for a day. What are they going to do? On the one hand, they have sincere aspiration, genuine aspiration, but their body revolts. I feel, in such rare cases, that they should eat meat.
But as a general rule, it is always advisable to be a vegetarian because we are trying to throw away the animal qualities and propensities from our nature. Already when we go deep within, we see that we have two different qualities or natures; the divine and the undivine. The undivine is the animal in us and the animal within us will always be aggressive and destructive. The divine in us will always be progressive and illumined. So if we want to march and run towards our Goal, then we have to do away with our animal life. To do that, whatever animal qualities we take into us in the form of meat or in some other form have to be discontinued.
Now to come back to your question, if one says that one has to be a vegetarian in order to realise God or that one cannot achieve God-realisation unless he is a vegetarian, then I say that it is pure foolishness. There are many meat-eaters who have realised God: Christ, Vivekananda and many others who realised God, but ate meat as others do. There are many. A few months ago someone told me that in order to have purity in abundance, he stopped eating meat, but he also felt that just by becoming a vegetarian, he would be able to realise God. He would not have to meditate, he would not have to concentrate; only by becoming a vegetarian, he could achieve union with the Absolute. So I told him that in India, all widows without exception are forbidden to take meat. When their husbands die, on that very day, they have to stop taking meat. Now in spite of my deepest love and respect for Indian widows, I don’t think that they are all God-realised souls. That kind of feeling towards the vegetarian life is absurd. Yet we have to strike a balance. For a sincere aspirant, it is certainly advisable and helpful to be a vegetarian.

Vegetarianism and Meditation
In 1980, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and meditation—and became a vegetarian. Since it’s been so long ago, being a vegetarian is not an issue for me anymore. However, in looking back, I recall being nervous about giving up gourmet seafood such as abalone and lobster that are treats of the Chinese culinary table.
In the beginning I promised myself two weeks of “vegetarian delight.” I was going to commit myself to meditation, and I wanted to explore new frontiers to enhance this emerging lifestyle.
After a few days, I found my palate so cleansed that I could actually taste the natural sweetness of organic vegetables. Crisp cucumber never tasted so refreshing. Baby bok choy lightly steamed and drizzled with a splash of olive oil and sautéed garlic seasoned with sea salt left me only wanting more.
30 years later, I’m still following a vegetarian lifestyle that’s filled me with more energy, endurance and strength.
"If we have some spiritual purity, then the physical purity that we get from not eating meat will be most effective", writes Sri Chinmoy.
Pure and simple. By eliminating restless animal energy in following a vegetarian diet, we’re able to enhance our receptivity to meditation.
What do we gain from vegetarianism and meditation? A vital energy source from within powering up the body’s outer activities that, along with live energy from purer food sources, makes total sense to go vegetarian. Ultimately, vegetarianism purifies the body, mind and heart with newer sources of energy and endurance.
World's Largest Lollipop
August 27, 2009. On the occasion of Sri Chinmoy's birth anniversary, New Yorker Ashrita Furman unveiled the world's largest lollipop with a weight of 6,706 pounds (3041 kg). It surpasses the previous Guinness World Record for a giant lollipop by almost 2,000 pounds (907 kg). Ashrita Furman, holder of the most Guinness records, was the architect behind the feat accompanied by an international team of over 25 assistants.

The 6,706 pound (3041 kg) lollipop is 10 feet (3 m) in diameter and 10 inches (25 cm) thick. The huge red candy is made of sugar and corn syrup, which was melted in hundred 100-gallon (380 litre) pots. Including the stick it has the height of 25 feet (7.50 m). This size ensures Ashrita Furman a new entry into the Guinness Book, because the previous largest lollipop was 4,759 pounds (2158 kg).
To put it in perspective this single lollipop would be the equivalent of 165,070 regular-sized lollipops!

Created in his Queens, New York neighborhood, the giant lollipop was hoisted into the air briefly on Sri Chinmoy's birth anniversary, August 27th, 2009. Onlookers included some of the 1,500 visitors from 50 countries gathered in New York to observe Sri Chinmoy's birth anniversary. The lollipop's colourful happy birthday message to Sri Chinmoy together with a reproduction of one of Sri Chinmoy's soul bird drawings came into view as the lollipop lifted into the air.
In honour of Sri Chinmoy's birthday, Ashrita dedicated the record to the late philosopher, poet and athlete who inspired him and humanity with his weightlifting world records and the World Harmony Run. "We know Sri Chinmoy for his compassion, kindness and sweetness and for that reason we are celebrating his birthday by making the largest lollipop," commented Ashrita.

Ashrita has set Guinness World Records on Sri Chinmoy's birthday on several occasions. In 2005 and 2008, he set a record for the most lit candles on a cake. In 2007, he dedicated the world's largest pencil to Sri Chinmoy. 2006 saw the creation of the largest popcorn sculpture and in 2004 he set a record for the largest flower bouquet.
Marking a page as 'news item' (Races site)
If you mark an item as a 'news' item - you can fill the 'image' field and the 'teaser' field just the same as for pages marked as an 'event'.
However, there are some new fields to fill in also:
Gallery URL
If you enter a URL here, visitors will be able to see a link to race photos directly from news 'views' you have set up on the site. Also, if you upload an image and choose to display the uploaded image on the page, there will be a button below it with a link to the gallery page.
Results
You can either enter a link to files you have uploaded, or to another page where the race results are. If you fill in this field, a 'results' button will show up on news views throughout the site, and also on the page itself.
Date
The date is basically set up so that if you are switching a page from an 'event' to a 'news' item after a race, the date will be the same as the 'To: date' in the event.
Note: if you are entering news items from an event that took place more than two weeks back, you will have to first click on 'item will appear under upcoming event' and ensure the 'From: date' is before the 'To: date', and then click on 'item will appear under latest news'. This is a bug we hope to fix shortly.
Location
This information is mainly for the global home page. You only need to enter your city (and country for Czechoslovakia and ODBS) - not latitude or longtitude.
Important note: very often you will need to create more than one page for a recent event (e.g a seperate results page and race report). In that case, just mark one of them as a news item - the one you want your visitors to see first (probably the race reports). You can then link the rest of them to that page - for example by placing the link to the results page in the 'results' section
Marking a page as 'upcoming event' (Races site)
- Click on Mark as event/news item (the first tab below the 'body' field)
- Select either 'upcoming news item' or 'upcoming events item'.

Selecting Options
After choosing 'This page will go under the upcoming events section", more fields will appear. These will allow you to supply information so the site can be displayed on the global front page (and other places on the site). You also have the option to display this information on the page itself, on a sidebar similar to the old Plone sites.
Note: If you don't see these additional fields, just click on one of the radio buttons 'This page will go under..." - This will reveal the rest of the options. The options for pages marked as 'event' will be different for pages marked as 'news' although they will still have some things in common.
Teasers
If you are planning for your item to appear in any 'views' which contain a 'teaser' description, or in the 'events' or 'news' sidebar block, you will need to specify it in the body field.
The teaser is a short sentence or two, like the first couple of sentences of a news report, enticing the reader to read more. (Basically, it's the same as the 'Description' field in Plone).
You have a choice:
- Either the teaser can be part of the page content
- Or you can have it so it is only visible in different 'views' displays, but not in the page itself
To do the first one (assuming the content is written already) just place the cursor where you want the teaser to end, and press the 'Teaser' button. A red line will now seperate teaser and cursor. The 'show summary in page view' checkbox should be already ticked, leave it like that. Be careful not to include images or any other formatting in the teaser - it should just be plain text.

To have the teaser seperate from the page content, write the teaser above the content, hit the 'Teaser' button, and uncheck the 'show summary in page view' checkbox. For best results, remove the whitespace below the red line so the content is right up against it.
Select Event type/News Category.
If you are doing a race, it is important to select the type here:
1. You can use it in listings of events generated by views
2. Even if you don't use it, selecting the event type will allow the race to appear in listings provided by other country sites, and the main site. For example, all races with the '2 miles' category can be automatically listed on the new 2 Mile Race site.
To designate an event as a 2 Mile Race, choose that in 'Available options' and use the '+' button to add to Selected Options. (It is not enough to just select it)
If an event falls under more than one category (e.g events with more than one race), you can add multiple cetegories to 'Selected Options'.
As well as events/race types there are also some categories there for news items (eg inspiring news)

Uploading Images
We can also upload an image to appear along with the news item / event item in the sidebar block and page. You can upload a camera quality image here (it will be automatically scaled down to 350px wide) but for best results you might consider resizing it yourself first. If you think the 'Latest News' section looks nicer without images, just leave this field alone.

You can include your image in the page itself by ticking the 'Image will appear on the page' checkbox, which is very convenient if you need to create your news item in a hurry!
Date
You can enter From: and To: dates. The date will be displayed differently depending on whether it is a one-day or multiday event.
There is also the opportunity to set repeat events, such as the 2 mile race (you can even specify weeks where it will not be happening).
In the Advanced menu, you can display things further - although it might not display so well if you are planning on including event details in the page body. (E.g: one thing that doesnt work so well right now is if you select 'every Saturday' - it shows 'Takes place every week every Saturday')
Location and Google Maps
- You can specify the location of your event, and at the same time add a Google Map.
-
For non English countries: Enter the English name of the city in the 'City (English name)' field - then you can put the 'Location' and 'City' fields in your native language.
- Google will try to estimated the map location from the address you have entered, but very often (especially if the event is out in the country somewhere) you are better off specifically listing the location by scrolling to the right spot and clicking on the map until a red marker appears. Alternatively you can find exact cordinates and add them in.
- If you choose to display the event details as a sidebar in the event body, you need to tick a checkbox to add the Google map to the sidebar.

Entry method
If you select an entry method and add the URL (and if choose to display event details in page body), nice 'Enter online'/'Download entry form' buttons will be displayed both in the page body, and in any 'views' you place in your site. You can select either/both/none as you wish.
You may wish to modify the these buttons in the page body to change the language ect. The Photoshop files to do this are:
Download entry form: http://www.srichinmoylife.com/files/psdbuttons/download-lg.psd
Enter online: http://www.srichinmoylife.com/files/psdbuttons/online-lg.psd
View photos: http://www.srichinmoylife.com/files/psdbuttons/gallerylink-lg.psd
View results: http://www.srichinmoylife.com/files/psdbuttons/results-lg.psd
Once edited the files should be saved as PNG's and placed in the 'entryimages' folder of your country site.
