One winter a Russian friend of mine started coming to visit us at Annam Brahma restaurant, where I work, very frequently. She was telling me about some experiences she was having that seemed quite strange. One day she told me something on the telephone that made me think, "Wow, this is really unusual. I think I'd better tell Sri Chinmoy about this. It might be serious." Just as we hung up and I had this thought, Guru immediately telephoned. I told him what my friend had been telling me: that she was having difficulty sleeping at night and that her husband was very upset because she seemed to be behaving strangely. She described some kind of being that was coming each night and hovering over her while she was lying in bed. It had big, broad, mesh-like wings, almost like some kind of insect, and it was hovering over her and flapping its wings more and more intensely and vigourously. It was trying to become her friend, and it was telling her to forget everything and just listen to it. She couldn't sleep. She was hearing voices and she was fascinated by this thing. It was coming more and more frequently and more and more powerfully, hovering just over her bed—a big, giant thing. As soon as I told Guru, he wanted me to try very carefully to explain what my friend had said. I did the best I could from memory, but Guru said this was not adequate. He said my friend had been attacked by a very serious force, similar to black magic or occult forces. Only a spiritual Master of the highest order, an occultist of the highest order, could fight these forces and take them away before they could execute permanent damage. They could either cause the person to go completely crazy or attack them physically so that they would have a heart attack or be paralysed or actually die. Guru said the attack was at quite an advanced stage, so he wanted me to ask my friend if she would be willing to come and meditate with him privately. She agreed. Soon after, at our evening function, Guru invited my friend into his private room. He had me stand behind her while he meditated on her very seriously. After that, the being went away, and gradually my friend regained a more normal state and could sleep.
